Researcher
This small investment management company based in the city is looking to hire a second Primary Researcher to build out the Insight function. You’ll need a passion for uncovering information and finding valuable answers to interesting questions. You’ll be working closely with both an experienced researcher and senior investment professionals.
They are fundamental investors that focus on mid-sized public companies based in Europe but often doing business all around the world.
High-quality insight is an integral part of their decision-making process. The Insight function plays a critical role in our investment process, working within the Investment Team on multiple businesses and categories depending on their focus.
The fact they have a dedicated researcher challenges the status quo in Investment Management. They are one of a handful of firms that see specialist research as a fundamental part of the investment process. They are all in on the value of genuine, differentiated insight and the professional development of our Researchers.
They are back in the office but not all the time. You’ll be able to work from home fairly flexibly, if you want to. Our office is in The City.
How the role contributes to their investment process:
Rigorous, evidence-based research is at the heart of how they invest. They pride themselves on sweating the details, being able to find answers to difficult or complex questions and leaving no stone unturned when it comes to learning about the businesses they’re evaluating.
They work on a huge variety of projects in terms of categories and methods. Since the start of 2021 they’ve spoken to transplant surgeons about organ technology, analytics engineers about the hybrid cloud, fashion consultants about supply chain ethics, UK Government managers about digital transformation, automotive sales consultants about online marketplaces and gaming YouTubers about VR. On top of that, they’ve attended webinars, Future forecasting training classes, trawled Flight Simulator forums and mapped restaurants in major cities.
The role involves working on a project-by-project basis from scoping to analysis and conclusions. You’ll align on the objectives of each project; help to shape the methodology and execute on your parts of the research plan. That could be finding interesting experts, conducting interviews, hunting for documentation, analysing commentary, browsing message boards or tracking down and analysing available data.
The ideal candidate will:
Be a fast learner. You don’t need to know how to do everything immediately but you should understand the fundamental principles of great research and be passionate about it. This is a mostly (but not entirely) qualitative role and an opportunity to learn new skills.
Be able to shine in a small team.
Be a problem solver.
Be energised at the thought of adding value.
Be ready to embrace autonomy.
Be eager to speak up.
